EPL: Arsenal edge Sunderland 3-0 to extend lead

Arsenal secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon to make it four straight victories in all competitions and open a nine-point gap at the top of the Premier League table.

The game was evenly contested for much of the first half until Martin Zubimendi finally broke the deadlock in the 40th minute.

The midfielder fired a “well-taken, drilled effort low in off the post” to give the hosts a deserved lead.

A post-match report published on Arsenal’s official website praised the Spanish international, describing the strike as a “wonderful, crisp finish from our summer signing.”

The goal was Zubimendi’s fifth of the Premier League season, underlining his growing influence in Mikel Arteta’s side.

Sunderland remained competitive throughout the first half, with Arsenal nearly scoring inside the opening 30 seconds when Leandro Trossard twisted and turned on the right byline, lifted his cross into the middle where Kai Havertz rose unmarked, but headed wide.

The visitors had their moments as well: Trai Hume sliced a clearance just over his own bar from a Noni Madueke inswinging cross, and Declan Rice unleashed a long-range effort that “just fizzed wide of the post.”

The second half saw Arsenal break the game open thanks to substitutes, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring twice. His first goal came “midway through the second period, smashing home from a Kai Havertz pass,” after only a few minutes on the pitch. He completed the scoring deep in injury time, “sliding in from Gabriel Martinelli’s pass on the break,” marking his 13th goal of his debut season. The team’s clean sheet was their 21st in all competitions, surpassing the total from the entire previous season.

Arsenal dominated possession at times but Sunderland tested them early in the second half. Chemsdine Talbi curved his shot low towards the far post, but David Raya got enough of a hand on it to turn it away, and William Saliba hacked clear. Gabriel had to perfectly time his challenge in the box soon afterwards to prevent an equaliser.

The match also featured a controversial moment when Arsenal appeared to win a penalty after Jesus was bundled over after rounding the keeper in the box, but VAR confirmed the striker was “marginally offside as he ran from the halfway line.”

Looking ahead, Arsenal will face Brentford in a midweek Premier League clash in West London on Thursday before returning to the Emirates Stadium next Sunday to host League One side Wigan Athletic in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
