Meet Prof. Tukur Adamu, new VC of Zamfara University

Professor Tukur Adamu, a respected scholar in public health parasitology, has officially taken office as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Gusau (FUG).

Known for his dedication to teaching, research, and community development, Prof. Adamu has promised to raise academic standards at the university while ensuring the safety and welfare of both students and staff.

Background

Born on February 2, 1962, in Gurbi, Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Prof. Adamu began his education at Tudun Wada Primary School in Gusau before attending Government Secondary School, Gusau.

He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Zoology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1986 and 1993, respectively.

He later obtained a Ph.D. in Zoology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in 1999 and 2000.

Early career

Prof. Adamu started his career as a fisheries officer with the Sokoto State Ministry of Agriculture in 1987 before moving into teaching at the State College of Arts and Sciences, Sokoto.

In 1989, he joined Usmanu Danfodiyo University as a Graduate Assistant and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Parasitology in 2005.

Over the years, he has held many leadership roles, including head of departments, deputy dean, director of the School of Matriculation Studies, and chairman of various boards and committees.

Research works

He has supervised more than 60 postgraduate research projects, served as an external examiner for several universities, and published over 70 research papers.

His work focuses on public health parasitology, and he is a member of professional groups such as the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria, the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology, and the Zoological Society of Nigeria.

Positions held

Beyond academia, Prof. Adamu has played a significant role in education development in Zamfara State.

He has served as Rector of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, member of the State Scholarship Board, and chairman of multiple educational committees.

His work has contributed to improving educational policies, supporting youth development, and strengthening institutions across the state.

Personal life

Married with children, Prof. Adamu balances his family life with teaching, research, and community service.

As the new Vice Chancellor of FUG, he is committed to promoting academic excellence, protecting students and staff, and guiding the university toward growth and national recognition.
