The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The AMAC Collation Officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, announced that Maikalangu, the incumbent chairman, secured 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast in the election, returning him to office.

According to the results released at the collation centre, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) placed third with 3,398 votes.

Prof. Abue disclosed that 2,336 votes were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 65,197. He added that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, with 65,676 accredited voters participating in the election.

“Christopher Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Abue stated during the official declaration.

A breakdown of votes by party shows that Accord polled 403 votes; Action Alliance secured 108; Action Democratic Party recorded 588; All Progressives Grand Alliance got 1,111; Allied Peoples Movement scored 122; Action Peoples Party had 32; Boot Party received 43; New Nigeria Peoples Party garnered 1,694; National Rescue Movement got 73; Peoples Redemption Party secured 90; Social Democratic Party polled 2,185; Young Progressives Party received 421; and Zenith Labour Party obtained 189 votes.

Reacting to the outcome, APC Collation Agent Gambo Babale described the election and collation process as credible and transparent, commending INEC for what he termed a smooth exercise across polling units and collation centres. He noted that the PDP won two ward councillor seats in Karu and Karishi, which he said demonstrated the fairness of the process.

Similarly, YPP Ward Collation Agent Abdullahi Ibrahim applauded the transparency of the election and congratulated the winner. Result sheets were signed by party agents from ADC, APC, APGA, YPP, and NNPP present at the collation centre.
