BREAKING: PDP’s Mohammed Kasim Wins Gwagwalada chairmanship

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mohammed Kasim, has won the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election conducted across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Kasim secured 22,165 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 17,788 votes.

Declaring the result, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, described the election as peaceful and smooth.

He confirmed that Kasim, having scored the highest number of lawful votes, was duly elected chairman of the council.

The chairmanship election in Gwagwalada recorded 207,577 registered voters, with 46,294 accredited voters participating in the exercise. A total of 43,960 valid votes were cast, while 1,521 votes were rejected.

A breakdown of the results shows that Accord (A) polled 151 votes; Action Alliance (AA) secured 116 votes; African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 1,366 votes; Action Democratic Party (ADP) had 128 votes; All Progressives Congress (APC) garnered 17,788 votes; All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) received 1,687 votes; Allied Peoples Movement (APM) got 24 votes; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) polled 175 votes; Social Democratic Party (SDP) secured 432 votes; and Young Progressives Party (YPP) recorded 158 votes.

Kasim’s campaign manifesto focused on community welfare, women’s empowerment, improved healthcare services, and enhanced educational opportunities for children.

The victory comes at a time when the PDP is facing internal challenges at the national level, including leadership disputes and defections of some prominent members to other political parties.

Despite this, the outcome in Gwagwalada represents a significant win for the party in one of the area councils of Nigeria’s capital territory.
