The National Police Council has unanimously endorsed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following a meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja on Monday.

The endorsement was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who stated, “Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP.”

The council convened to comply with the Police Act 2020, which mandates consideration by the Police Council before the President transmits the nomination to the Senate for confirmation.

The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, was attended by key officials including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Head of Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack, several state governors, and ministers including those of Police Affairs, Interior, and the Federal Capital Territory.

Disu, 59, had been serving as Acting IGP since Wednesday, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who cited family reasons for stepping down.

Reports indicate that Egbetokun was summoned to the Presidential Villa prior to his resignation.

The Police Council, chaired by the President, is composed of all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP, and plays a strategic role in advising on police administration, budgeting, and senior appointments.

Disu’s confirmation as substantive IGP is expected to ensure continuity in ongoing security reforms and strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force amid the country’s continuing security challenges.
