BREAKING: Wike wins as Appeal Court upholds ruling nullifying controversial Ibadan convention
The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal filed by Turaki and his group, affirming the earlier judgment of the Federal High Court that nullified the controversial Ibadan convention.
The appellate court, in a unanimous decision delivered by a three-member panel chaired by Justice Mohammed Ambi-Usi Danjuma, upheld the lower court’s ruling and imposed a fine of ₦2 million on the appellants.
Other members of the panel included Justices Okechukwu Onyemenam and Muhammed Mustapha.
In its judgment, the Court of Appeal ruled that the conduct of political party congresses and conventions must strictly comply with both the party’s constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The court held that when a political party fails to follow its own constitutional procedures or violates electoral laws during such processes, the matter can no longer be treated as an internal party affair.
According to the court, such actions open the door for judicial intervention because they undermine internal party democracy and the legal framework regulating political parties.
The appellate court therefore affirmed the Federal High Court’s decision declaring the Ibadan convention invalid.
