10 things to know about Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, Navy’s new Spokesperson

Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, a senior officer of the Nigerian Navy with decades of experience in operations, training and strategic communication, has been recently appointed as the Director of Naval Information and official spokesperson of the service. 

Below are 10 key things to know about him.

1. He was born on December 27, 1979, in Benin City, Edo State.

2. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy.

3. He also obtained a Graduate Certificate in Ethics and Emerging Military Technology from the United States Naval War College.

4. Captain Folorunsho was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in September 2003 as a Sub-Lieutenant after graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 50 Regular Course.

5. His professional military training includes Junior and Senior Staff Courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, as well as courses at the Pakistan Navy War College, the Naval War College of Nigeria and the United Nations Training Centre in Sweden.

6. Captain Folorunsho has held several operational, command and instructional appointments, including operations duties under Operation SAFE HAVEN, Commanding Officer of the Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defence and Firefighting School in Sapele, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and Military Liaison Officer at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

7. Captain Abiodun Folorunsho officially assumed duty as the Director of Naval Information and spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

8. He took over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who was redeployed after more than two years in the role to serve as Commander of NNS BEECROFT, the Navy’s premier base.

9. He has earned multiple postgraduate degrees, including Master’s degrees in War Studies (Maritime), International Affairs and Defence Studies, Energy Management, and National Security and Strategic Studies from institutions in Pakistan, Nigeria, Sweden and the United States.

10. He is a decorated officer and recipient of honours such as the Chief of the Naval Staff Award for Best Graduating Student, the United Nations Medal, the Meritorious Service Star and the General Operations Medal.
