10 things to know about Olugbemi Odusote, first female DG of Nigerian Law School
Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote, popularly known as Gbemi Odusote, is a seasoned legal scholar and administrator.
She recently made history following her appointment as the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, becoming the first woman to hold the position since the institution was founded.
Here are ten things to know about her.
1. Gbemi Odusote hails from the Nigerian Yoruba tribe, she was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988 after earning her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University.
2. She obtained her Master of Laws degree from the same institution, specialising in company and commercial law.
3. She later earned a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, with her academic interests focusing on public law and the administration of justice.
4. Odusote joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and has spent about two decades teaching Property Law Practice, including wills and estate administration.
5. She is a solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and was appointed a Notary Public of Nigeria in June 2022.
6. Her professional experience includes corporate secretarial practice, having worked with Abdullai, Taiwo & Co. and served as a company secretary.
7. Over the years, she has served in several leadership capacities at the Nigerian Law School, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics and Head of Campus.
8. Gbemi Odusote’s appointment as Director-General of the Nigerian Law School was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and has been widely described as a landmark moment for legal education in Nigeria.
9. Before her appointment as Director-General, she was serving as Director of Academics at the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School.
10. Beyond her academic and professional life, Odusote is known for her strong Christian faith and community involvement.
She is a minister and marriage counsellor, married to Olatunde Odusote of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and is often described as disciplined, resourceful and passionate about excellence.
