2027 Polls: INEC says no timetable has been issued

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, describing the information as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, Adedayo Oketola, spokesperson to the INEC chairman, said the commission had not unveiled any official timetable for the 2027 polls, contrary to reports circulating in some quarters.

“INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 general election,” Oketola stated.

He explained that the commission operates strictly within the provisions of the law, stressing that the timing for releasing election schedules is clearly guided by the Electoral Act.

According to him, Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, stipulates that INEC shall publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election, adding that any timetable issued outside this legal framework cannot emanate from the commission.

Oketola assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election would be released at the appropriate time and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.

He further said that when the timetable is eventually released, it would be communicated through INEC’s established and verified channels.

The commission urged members of the public and the media to disregard the fake reports and rely only on information published through INEC’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative updates.
