2027: Trump supports my fuel subsidy restoration policy — Atiku

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that United States President Donald Trump supports his proposed policy of restoring fuel subsidy if elected president of Nigeria in 2027.

Atiku, a former Vice-President, has pledged to reintroduce what he describes as a production subsidy on petroleum products as part of his economic agenda.

He made the claim in a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, titled, “Atiku Boasts of Stakeholders, Trump Support on Fuel Subsidy.”

Defending his position, Atiku said his proposed production subsidy would be designed to support domestic production and refining while reducing the burden of fuel costs on Nigerians.

“This is why my Production Subsidy is about putting money back into people’s pockets. Support what we produce and refine here, increase supply, monitor the price and make sure Nigerians feel the benefit at the pump,” he said.

Atiku also referred to the position of the Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria (CORAN), which he said supports greater emphasis on domestic production.

“CORAN is saying support domestic production. America understands the importance of supporting strategic energy production,” he added.

The ADC candidate further criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu over its position on fuel subsidy, arguing that the government provides waivers, incentives and concessions to businesses while opposing interventions intended to reduce the burden on ordinary Nigerians.

“Yet Tinubu attacks relief for ordinary Nigerians while his government understands perfectly well how to grant waivers, incentives and concessions to multinational oil companies and businesses close to his administration.

“So why does intervention suddenly become bad economics when ordinary Nigerians are meant to benefit?” Atiku asked.
