442 Former Councillors set to dump APC in Zamfara, join growing defection wave
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State may be facing another major political shake-up as 442 former councillors from the state’s 14 Local Government Areas reportedly prepare to leave the party.
The former councillors, who served during the administration of former Governor Abdul’aziz Yari, are said to be consulting with their supporters and considering a move to another political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reported development comes amid a growing wave of defections from the APC in Zamfara.
Just last week, nine members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly defected from the APC to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The lawmakers cited concerns including insecurity, internal divisions, alleged injustice and what they described as poor governance as some of the reasons for leaving the ruling party.
Their defection followed earlier resignations by eight lawmakers from the APC, with subsequent reports confirming that nine legislators had ultimately moved to the ADC.
The latest reported move by the former councillors could further alter the political calculations in Zamfara, particularly at the grassroots level, where former local government officials retain networks and influence.
The development is also significant because Yari, whose administration the former councillors served under, is currently the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
The reported defections therefore come at a time when APC leaders in Zamfara are seeking to consolidate the party ahead of the 2027 election.
However, the 442 former councillors’ reported plan to defect has not yet been independently confirmed, and their proposed destination has not been officially established.
If the move eventually happens, it could represent another major test for the APC’s grassroots structure in Zamfara ahead of the 2027 elections.
Could the reported defection of 442 former councillors change the political balance in Zamfara ahead of 2027?
