8 Aspirants join Rivers governorship race, pick N40m ADC endorsement form

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said it is witnessing a surge in political interest in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections, disclosing that no fewer than eight aspirants have already indicated interest in contesting the governorship ticket of the party.

The development comes as the party also commended the former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for what it described as his “boldness” in picking up the ADC presidential nomination form ahead of the polls.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday night, the State ADC chairman-elect, Dr Chukwudi Dimkpa, said the growing interest reflects what he called a rising confidence in the party as a viable alternative platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to him, the increasing influx of politicians, professionals, and technocrats into the ADC shows that the party is gradually becoming a “preferred platform for credible leadership and people-driven governance.”

Dimkpa noted that the governorship race in Rivers State has attracted a diverse pool of aspirants, including former public office holders, technocrats, and private sector operators. Among those reportedly interested are a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, a former member of the House of Representatives, a former Executive Director at the Nigerian Ports Authority, a former NIMASA chairman, a former Commissioner for Employment Generation, and a former Chief Medical Director of UPTH, alongside other professionals and entrepreneurs.

He added that interest is also growing beyond the governorship race, with several individuals expressing intention to contest Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats under the ADC platform.

Describing the trend as significant, Dimkpa said the party is no longer being viewed as a fringe alternative but increasingly as a “party to beat” in the emerging political realignments.

He said, “For years, many Nigerians complained that credible people stayed away from politics. Today, credible people are not only joining politics but are deliberately choosing ADC.”

The party leadership further stated that the influx reflects confidence in its internal democratic processes and its commitment to transparent, peaceful, and issue-based politics as preparations for 2027 intensify in Rivers State.
