Gov. Zulum defends airstrike zone, says Jilli Market was closed years ago

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has stated that the Jilli market, where a recent deadly airstrike reportedly claimed over 50 lives, was officially closed five years ago due to alleged links with insurgent activities.

The governor made the clarification in a statement issued on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, while reacting to the incident.

Zulum said the market had served as a suspected hub for logistics support to insurgents and was therefore shut down by the state government years ago.

“I have been properly briefed on the airstrike carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai on Jilli market… Let me state categorically that the Borno State Government closed Jilli and Gazabure markets five years ago,” the governor said.

He added that the state government remains in close coordination with the military and the government of Yobe State on security operations in the affected areas.

Zulum warned residents against aiding or providing logistical support to Boko Haram insurgents, stressing that such actions undermine security efforts.

He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to working with security agencies to restore peace and stability across the state, while urging residents to provide credible intelligence to support ongoing operations.

The governor further noted that Borno State only reopens communities and markets after careful consultation with security agencies, especially in areas previously affected by insurgency.
