ADC defies INEC, proceeds with national convention today

The African Democratic Congress is set to hold its much-anticipated National Convention today in Abuja despite opposition from the Independent National Electoral Commission over the exercise.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed the development on Monday, signaling the party’s determination to proceed with the convention after completing its polling unit, ward, local government and state congresses between April 7 and 11, 2026.

Supreme Court to Hear Mark’s Appeal

The convention coincides with a crucial legal battle at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, where an appeal filed by former Senate President David Mark is scheduled for hearing.

Mark is seeking an order staying the execution of the March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which led to changes in the party’s recognised leadership structure.

In the appeal marked SC/CV/180/2026, Mark asked the apex court to restrain INEC from recognising any persons other than himself and the current national officers of the ADC pending determination of the matter.

He also requested that INEC be stopped from altering the leadership structure of the party and sought a stay of proceedings in a related suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Leadership Crisis Deepens

INEC had on April 1 removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as ADC National Chairman and National Secretary respectively, following the Appeal Court ruling.

The decision intensified the internal leadership tussle involving rival claimant Nafiu Bala Gombe and other party stakeholders.

Venue Drama: ADC Settles for Rainbow Event Center

After failing to secure Eagle Square and the Velodrome at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, the ADC has chosen Rainbow Event Center, located in Garki Area 8, as the venue for the convention.

Party officials had earlier written to the office of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike requesting access to Eagle Square, but claimed they received no response.

However, Wike denied blocking the request, insisting no formal application was submitted through the appropriate channel.

“We do not deny anyone access if the rules are followed,” the minister said.

High Stakes for Opposition Politics

Today’s convention is seen as a defining moment for the ADC as it seeks to strengthen itself ahead of the 2027 elections amid growing defections, internal disputes and mounting pressure from rival parties.

The outcome of both the convention and the court cases could significantly shape the future direction of the opposition party..
