Binani rejects Adamawa ADC congresses, cites court order

A prominent governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State, Aishatu Ahmed Binani, has condemned the state, local government and ward congresses conducted in the state despite a subsisting court order.

Binani addressed supporters from the 21 local government areas during a gathering in Yola on Monday, where she questioned the legitimacy of the congresses after a High Court in Yola directed that the exercise be suspended.

An ADC committee reportedly went ahead with the congresses over the weekend in defiance of the court order. The suspension followed a suit filed by the state chairman of the party, Yohanna Shehu, who alleged that he and his executive committee were completely sidelined in the planning of the exercise.

After supporters spoke at the rally held at Lamido Cinema in Yola, Binani restated their concerns and urged calm while awaiting the court’s final decision.

The High Court had ordered all parties to maintain the status quo pending determination of the substantive suit and adjourned the matter to Wednesday, April 15.

Binani appealed to her supporters to remain peaceful, saying the next step would depend on the court ruling, especially if the disputed congresses are eventually nullified but party officials still attempt to recognise those elected.

> “If the court eventually decides that the conduct of the congresses is okay despite the order suspending them, we should accept it,” she said.

The development signals fresh internal tensions within the ADC in Adamawa as political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections begin to intensify.
