Borrowings: We just have to work hard to be able to repay our loan – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has defended his administration’s approach to borrowing, stating that taking loans is not inherently negative provided they are used for productive purposes and responsibly repaid.

Speaking on economic policy, the President said borrowing remains a necessary tool for financing development projects, particularly infrastructure, amid ongoing fiscal constraints.

“If we have to borrow money, we will, because borrowing is not leprosy; we just have to work hard to be able to repay it,” he said.

His remarks come as Nigeria continues to depend on a combination of domestic and external loans to fund budget deficits and major infrastructure projects aimed at stimulating economic growth.

Tinubu stressed that any borrowing must be tied to investments capable of generating returns and supporting long-term economic stability, rather than unproductive or unsustainable spending.

The position reflects the government’s broader economic reform agenda, which seeks to balance infrastructure expansion with fiscal discipline while managing rising debt obligations.

However, the comments have continued to generate debate among economists, policy analysts, and stakeholders over Nigeria’s debt sustainability, repayment capacity, and the long-term implications for future generations.
