INEC sets June 20, 2026 for Ekiti guber poll, by-elections across six states
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 20, 2026, for the Ekiti State governorship election and by-elections to fill vacant legislative seats across six states in what it describes as a major off-cycle electoral exercise.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the date on Thursday in Abuja during a brief ceremony to officially welcome a newly sworn-in National Commissioner, Jamila Malafa.
According to him, the commission will conduct multiple elections on the same day, including the Ekiti governorship poll and by-elections into the National Assembly and state legislatures.
He explained that the by-elections will cover senatorial seats in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Ondo States, a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State, and a House of Representatives seat in Kano State.
“We are going into some off-cycle elections very soon. The Ekiti State Governorship Election is scheduled for June 20, 2026. On the same date, the commission will conduct by-elections to fill vacant seats,” Amupitan said.
He added that the commission remains committed to delivering credible and transparent elections across all levels of governance, including presidential, governorship, legislative, and area council elections.
“Our responsibility is clear. We are committed to conducting elections credibly and transparently,” he stated.
The INEC Chairman also welcomed Malafa into the commission, describing her as a seasoned professional with experience in military service and electoral administration, particularly in logistics and legal services.
In her remarks, Malafa expressed appreciation for her appointment and pledged to support the commission’s mandate as it prepares for upcoming electoral activities.
“I look forward to working with everyone for the development and stability of our country, and for the success of forthcoming elections,” she said.
The announcement signals the start of intensified political activities ahead of 2026 and 2027, as parties begin positioning for both off-cycle and general elections.
