NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, urges action on insecurity, poverty as journalists mark 2026 Workers’ Day
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has felicitated journalists and workers across the Federal Capital Territory on the occasion of the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration, calling for urgent and sustained action to tackle insecurity and poverty in the country.
In a May Day message, Ike described this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as a timely reflection of the harsh realities confronting Nigerian workers, noting that the twin challenges continue to undermine productivity, threaten livelihoods, and erode the dignity of labour.
She commended journalists in the FCT for their resilience and commitment to ethical reporting despite operating in an increasingly difficult environment marked by safety risks and economic pressures.
According to her, insecurity not only endangers lives but also limits access to information and hampers effective journalism, while rising poverty continues to affect the welfare and morale of media practitioners and other workers.
Ike urged government at all levels to intensify efforts toward strengthening national security and implementing policies that directly address poverty, stressing that decent work can only thrive in a safe and economically stable environment.
She also called on media organisations to prioritise the welfare of journalists through fair remuneration, improved working conditions, insurance coverage, and continuous professional development.
Reaffirming the union’s commitment, she encouraged journalists to remain united in advocating for professionalism, accountability, and the protection of workers’ rights.
“Through collective effort and unwavering dedication, we can contribute to building a safer, more equitable, and prosperous society,” she said.
Ike wished journalists and workers in the FCT a reflective and peaceful May Day celebration.
