Shettima denies coup plot against Tinubu, says people misled president

Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that some unnamed individuals allegedly attempted to create a rift between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after they assumed office in 2023, including claims that he was plotting to assassinate the president.

Shettima made the disclosure during the public presentation of “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” the autobiography of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

According to him, the allegations were allegedly sponsored by individuals from his home state of Borno, although he did not name those involved.

“Three months into our swearing in, some people told Tinubu I was planning to kill him to take over power,” Shettima was quoted as saying.

He explained that President Tinubu personally confronted him over the claim but quickly dismissed it after reviewing the inconsistencies in the story.

Shettima further narrated that the controversy centred around clothes he had previously gifted the president before the 2023 elections, which were later alleged to have been spiritually manipulated.

“The President had called me and said, ‘Sit down! Your people came to me and said stop wearing those Shettima’s clothes,’” he said.

However, Shettima noted that President Tinubu rejected the claims and continued wearing the clothes despite the warnings, dismissing the allegations as baseless.

He added that the incident demonstrated attempts by certain individuals to sow distrust within the presidency, stressing that both he and Tinubu remained focused on governance.

The Vice President used the occasion to call for national unity, urging Nigerians to avoid actions that promote division and political suspicion.

The event, which had several prominent political figures and former military leaders in attendance, was held in honour of General Yakubu Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s history.
