2027: Ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar loses APC gubernatorial ticket in Bauchi

Nigeria’s immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has failed in his bid to secure the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election in Bauchi State.

Tuggar, who recently resigned from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue his governorship ambition, was defeated in the party’s primary election held on Friday.

The APC Governorship and House of Assembly Primaries Committee for Bauchi State declared former Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abubakar, as the winner of the contest.

Announcing the results in the early hours of Saturday, the committee chairman, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, John Bassey Abang, said Abubakar secured 57,517 votes to emerge victorious.

According to the results, Tuggar polled 26,001 votes to finish second in the keenly contested primary.

Other aspirants and their scores were:

Nura Manu Soro – 13,638 votes

Bala Maijama’a A. Wunti – 13,648 votes

Kabir Baba Ma’aji – 8,157 votes

Baba Abubakar Suleiman – 7,688 votes

Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi – 7,181 votes

Declaring the outcome, Abang said Mohammed Abubakar, having secured the highest number of lawful votes cast, was duly elected as the APC governorship candidate for Bauchi State in the 2027 election.

The victory marks a major political comeback for the former governor, who will now lead the APC’s bid to reclaim Bauchi State in the next governorship election.
