Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has emerged winner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election conducted across the 23 local government areas of Sokoto State.

The result was announced on Monday by the State Chief Returning Officer, Prof. Aminu Abubakar, who confirmed that the exercise was peaceful and orderly.

Prof. Abubakar said Atiku secured a total of 68,823 votes to clinch victory in the state exercise, defeating other contenders in the contest.

According to the official declaration, former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, polled 292 votes, while Muhammad Hayatuddeen scored 319 votes.

He further disclosed that a total of 69,434 votes were cast during the primary election.

“I therefore hereby declare Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate with the highest number of votes cast in Sokoto,” he announced.

The announcement was made in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel, and party stakeholders, including former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; ADC governorship candidate in the state, Mannir Dan Iya; Senatorial candidate for Sokoto South, Faruk Malami Yabo; and the state party chairman, Abdullahi Maigwandu, among others.

It would be recalled that the ADC in Sokoto State had earlier endorsed Atiku as its preferred candidate ahead of the presidential primary election.
