Tinubu will poll over 10 million votes in the 2027 presidential election — APC chairman
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed confidence that the ruling party will secure more than 10 million votes in the 2027 presidential election, citing its growing membership base and the impact of Federal Government intervention programmes across the country.
Yilwatda made the assertion during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday while reacting to the outcome of the APC presidential primary, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 election after polling 10.9 million votes.
Responding to questions on whether the APC could replicate its primary election figures in the general election, the party chairman insisted that the APC’s support extends beyond its registered members.
“More than that, these are our members,” Yilwatda said.
According to him, millions of Nigerians currently benefiting from various Federal Government programmes are likely to support the APC at the polls.
“In my own thinking, most students are members of our party. We have about 1.5 million students who are beneficiaries of the student loan scheme”.
“Their school fees are paid completely, and many of them have parents, brothers, and family members,” he stated.
Yilwatda also pointed to beneficiaries of the national health insurance scheme and workers engaged in major infrastructure projects as potential sources of electoral support for the ruling party.
“We have added about four million Nigerians to the health insurance scheme, especially retired, elderly, and vulnerable citizens. Do you think they will vote for another party aside from ours?” he asked.
The APC chairman further highlighted ongoing projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Badagry road project, and railway construction linking Kano, noting that thousands of Nigerians were directly and indirectly benefiting from the initiatives.
He maintained that the APC remains the most organised political party in Nigeria, claiming it currently boasts about 12.7 million registered members nationwide and possesses an effective internal conflict-resolution mechanism.
Yilwatda also dismissed allegations that the APC was responsible for the internal crises affecting opposition parties, while insisting that President Tinubu was not imposing candidates on the party.
His remarks come as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election.
In the 2023 presidential election, President Tinubu polled more than eight million votes, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi each secured over six million votes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the 2027 presidential election for January 16, 2027.
