Tinubu’s govt has recorded fewer insecurity-related deaths than past governments — APC chieftain

A former Acting National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Hilliard Etta, has defended the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on security and economic matters, insisting that insecurity-related deaths have declined under the current administration.

Speaking during an interview, Etta rejected claims that insecurity has worsened since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, arguing that assessments should be based on available data and security statistics rather than public perception.

According to him, fewer Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity under the Tinubu administration compared to previous governments.

“Far less people have died under Asiwaju Bola Tinubu than any government before now. It’s in the newspapers and terrorism index reports,” Etta said.

The APC chieftain also dismissed suggestions that terrorist groups and criminal elements have inflicted more casualties than the military has neutralised, urging Nigerians to acknowledge the efforts and sacrifices of security personnel.

He maintained that security forces have recorded significant successes against insurgents and criminal networks across various parts of the country.

Beyond security, Etta commended the administration’s infrastructure programme, describing the scale of ongoing road construction projects nationwide as unprecedented in Nigeria’s recent history.

According to him, about 2,700 kilometres of reinforced concrete roads are currently under construction across the country, a feat he said surpasses what previous civilian administrations achieved within a similar timeframe.

“The level of infrastructural development in this country in the past two years is unprecedented. No government outside the Tinubu administration has been able to do this,” he stated.

Etta also pointed to economic indicators as evidence of progress, arguing that Nigeria’s economy has continued to grow despite concerns over inflation and the rising cost of living.

He said the country is currently among the faster-growing economies globally, while foreign reserves have improved significantly under the current administration.

The remarks come amid continuing national debate over the impact of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, security strategy and infrastructure investments as the government approaches the midpoint of its first term in office.
