BREAKING: Senators scamper for safety as fire guts Senate wing of National Assembly (Video)

Fire has engulfed part of the wing housing the Nigerian Senate at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Wednesday, briefly disrupting activities at the upper chamber.

The incident reportedly occurred at Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, a nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.

According to preliminary reports, the fire started in the kitchen compartment of the hearing room, with sources suggesting it may have been triggered by a microwave that was left switched on.

Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were among those who reportedly led immediate efforts to contain the flames, helping to prevent the situation from escalating.

The fire was quickly brought under control before it could spread to other sections of the chamber, and no casualties were recorded.

Normal legislative activities reportedly resumed shortly after the incident.

However, there were claims that journalists present at the scene were directed by committee officials to delete photos and videos captured during the incident.
