BREAKING: Reps set to decide on State Police proposal Thursday
The House of Representatives has announced plans to vote on a constitutional amendment that would pave the way for the establishment of state and local police across Nigeria as part of efforts to tackle the country’s growing security challenges.
Speaking to journalists shortly after plenary on Tuesday, the Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Benjamin Kalu, said lawmakers have agreed to give priority attention to the proposal for state police before considering other constitutional amendment bills.
According to Kalu, the decision reflects the National Assembly’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to the worsening insecurity affecting many parts of the country.
He noted that the state police proposal has become one of the most important issues before the constitutional review committee and will receive urgent consideration.
He said the House has directed all members who are currently out of Abuja for oversight to suspend such and return to the parliament on Thursday for the voting procedure.
The House bill on state police is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker and 14 other members of the House
