Obi to Tinubu: Resign over governance failures or don’t seek re-election in 2027

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to resign over what he described as failures in governance or, alternatively, not seek re-election in the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Idris Zekeri, Obi argued that the President’s handling of insecurity and governance had negatively affected Nigerians and heightened concerns about corruption.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate said his appeal was motivated by national interest rather than politics.

Obi recalled that in 2014, then-opposition leader Bola Tinubu called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign following the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, accusing him of failing to demonstrate leadership and compassion.

He argued that a similar situation had occurred under the current administration, noting that 52 days after the abduction of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers in Oyo State, President Tinubu had allegedly not contacted Governor Seyi Makinde over the incident.

Obi disclosed that he had publicly appealed to the kidnappers to release the victims, spoken with Governor Makinde on two occasions, and visited Ibadan on July 3 alongside Prof. Pat Utomi to express solidarity with the governor.

According to Obi, Makinde informed him that he had not received a phone call from President Tinubu regarding the abduction.

Drawing from his experience as Governor of Anambra State, Obi said former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan regularly reached out to state governors during major security emergencies.

He maintained that the Tinubu administration had witnessed more than 13 school abductions, arguing that the President’s alleged failure to personally engage affected governors reflected a lack of leadership and empathy.

Obi concluded that the continued captivity of schoolchildren, teachers and other Nigerians highlighted what he described as a collapse in governance, insisting that President Tinubu should either resign or refrain from seeking another term in office.

“This appeal is motivated by patriotism, not politics. A New Nigeria is Possible,” the statement said.
