Its Official: Andy Burnham appointed UK Prime Minister
Andy Burnham has officially become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after being invited by King Charles III to form a government at Buckingham Palace.
Burnham, who becomes the UK’s fifth prime minister in four years, is expected to travel to 10 Downing Street to deliver his first speech as Prime Minister.
His appointment follows the formal resignation of Keir Starmer, who, in his farewell address outside Downing Street, said he was leaving office “with good grace” and “a smile.”
Burnham was elected Leader of the Labour Party on Friday and is expected to begin implementing his administration’s agenda, with reports suggesting a possible cut in income tax among the policies under consideration.
Later on Monday, the new Prime Minister is expected to begin reshuffling the government by appointing new ministers and making changes to his Cabinet.
Meanwhile, Prisons Minister Lord Timpson resigned earlier in the day ahead of the formation of the new government.
