2027: Trump’s letter won’t save you from defeat – ADC to Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed the significance of the recent letter from United States President Donald Trump to President Bola Tinubu, insisting it will not shield the President from electoral defeat or change Nigerians’ assessment of his administration.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the Presidency’s celebration of the letter reflected what he described as a search for international validation rather than evidence of improved governance.

According to the ADC, diplomatic correspondence between world leaders is a routine aspect of international relations and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the Tinubu administration’s performance.

The opposition party argued that Nigerians would judge the government based on its handling of insecurity, the economy and other domestic challenges rather than messages exchanged with foreign leaders.

“The African Democratic Congress has noted the Presidency’s attempt to present President Donald Trump’s letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as though it were a referendum on the state of the nation. It is not,” the statement said.

The party maintained that while it respects the office of the President of the United States, no diplomatic communication can replace the judgment of Nigerians on the government’s performance.

It added that the letter does not change the country’s security situation, noting that several communities across Nigeria continue to face attacks, while hundreds of women and children remain in captivity in parts of Borno and Kaiama in Kwara State.

According to the ADC, the Tinubu administration should devote more attention to addressing insecurity and improving the welfare of citizens than celebrating diplomatic correspondence.

The party also referenced the current United States travel advisory on Nigeria, noting that several parts of the country remain under Level 3 and Level 4 warnings due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest.

It argued that the advisory contradicts attempts to portray the letter as evidence of international endorsement of the administration’s security record.

“We therefore wonder how correspondence from a government that designates several Nigerian states as ‘Do Not Travel’ areas can be regarded as an endorsement,” the statement added.

The ADC stressed that President Trump’s letter neither absolves the Federal Government of its responsibilities nor serves as an endorsement of the administration’s overall performance.

The party insisted that the true test of leadership lies in whether Nigerians can live safely, travel freely and enjoy improved living conditions.

The Presidency had on Wednesday released a letter dated July 6, 2026, in which President Trump commended Tinubu’s leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity, particularly attacks on Christian communities.

In the letter, Trump praised Tinubu’s efforts to combat terrorism and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria.
