Nnamdi Kanu: US congressman moves motion seeking IPOB leader’s immediate release

A member of the United States Congress, John James, has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, urging the Nigerian government to grant him a fresh trial in line with constitutional and international legal standards.
Speaking on the floor of the US Congress on Thursday, James argued that Nigeria should conduct a new trial for Kanu based on credible evidence, while ensuring access to legal representation, medical care and humane conditions of detention in accordance with international law.
The congressman also described Nigeria as one of the world’s most dangerous places for Christians, alleging that the country has witnessed a sustained wave of religiously motivated violence in recent years.
According to him, thousands of Christians have been killed since 2019 in attacks allegedly carried out by Islamist extremist groups, including Boko Haram, while claiming that the Nigerian government has failed to respond adequately.
James further alleged that Kanu was convicted after what he described as an unfair trial and claimed that the IPOB leader is serving a life sentence on what he called unfounded terrorism charges.
“I implore my colleagues to support my bill for the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally,” the lawmaker said.
He also argued that the United States should reconsider its financial support to Nigeria if concerns over religious violence remain unaddressed.
“America gives billions of dollars to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund Christian genocide,” he stated.
Calling for international attention to the situation, James said the global community has a moral responsibility to defend religious freedom and ensure that Christians in Nigeria are able to practise their faith without fear of violence.
