US condemns killing of Plateau cleric’s family, demands justice

The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Plateau-based cleric, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, describing the attack as horrific and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice without delay.

In a statement issued on Friday, the US expressed condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the attack, while voicing concern over the persistent violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The US government said it recently held discussions with Nigerian officials on the worsening security situation, stressing the need for stronger efforts to prevent further attacks.

It urged the Nigerian authorities to enhance security measures and ensure the protection of Christians and other vulnerable communities across the country.

The statement also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to working with the Nigerian government and international partners to combat terrorism, counter violent extremism and promote an environment where all Nigerians can practise their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution.

“The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming,” the statement read.

It added, “We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected. As I discussed last week with Nigerian officials, we must do more to prevent violent acts like those yesterday. The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities.”

The US further stated that it remains committed to supporting Nigeria in tackling terrorism and violent extremism while promoting religious freedom for all citizens.

The condemnation followed the killing of nine members of Rev. Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old baby, during an overnight attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on July 12.

Rev. Dachomo, who serves as the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) for Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, alleged that his family had repeatedly been targeted because of his outspoken campaign against what he described as genocide in Plateau State.

He also disclosed that his grandmother and an uncle had been killed in separate attacks allegedly carried out by extremists.

According to the cleric, shortly after burying the nine victims, he received a written threat from the same militia group, warning that he would be their next target.
