Kwankwaso foresees danger ahead of the 2027 polls over state police

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed reservations over the proposed creation of state police, warning that the initiative could be abused for political purposes.

Speaking during an interview with News Central TV on Thursday night, the national leader of the Kwankwassiyya Movement argued that state governors could deploy the proposed police structure to protect their political interests rather than serve the public.

According to Kwankwaso, the growing demand for state police is largely a consequence of leadership failures, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

“There is a huge leadership failure in Northern Nigeria. State police is as a result of that failure,” he said.

He warned that establishing state police without adequate safeguards could create new challenges for the country’s democratic system.

“There are so many dangers associated with state police. The governors would want to use them for political protection,” Kwankwaso stated.

He also cautioned against the unchecked proliferation of firearms, urging the government to ensure that small arms do not circulate freely.

“The government must not allow the circulation of small arms just like that,” he added.
