APC crises deepens in Bauchi as Tuggar Campaign denies endorsing APC guber candidate

Published

The Yusuf Maitama Tuggar Campaign Organisation has dismissed reports claiming that supporters of the Minister of Foreign Affairs have accepted the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Bauchi State and pledged support to the party’s candidate, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar (SAN).

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the campaign’s Special Assistant on Media, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the organisation described the reports as false and said they did not reflect its official position.

According to the statement, claims that Tuggar’s supporters had shifted their allegiance to the APC governorship candidate were inaccurate and misleading.

The reaction followed a press conference held in Bauchi by a group that identified itself as supporters of Ambassador Tuggar, where members declared support for Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The group, led by one of Tuggar’s coordinators, Musa Abdullahi, made the announcement on Tuesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Bauchi.

However, the Tuggar Campaign Organisation said those behind the declaration admitted they were not speaking on behalf of Ambassador Tuggar and had no mandate to issue statements in his name.

It maintained that the views expressed by the group were personal and should not be interpreted as the position of Ambassador Tuggar or his campaign.

The organisation also reiterated its stance that no valid APC governorship primary election was conducted in Bauchi State.

It argued that the process which produced the party’s governorship candidate lacked broad consultation and was not based on the voluntary agreement of all aspirants and key stakeholders.

According to the campaign, the exercise could not be regarded as a legitimate consensus in line with the principles of internal party democracy.

The statement further stressed that Ambassador Tuggar remains a loyal member of the APC and is committed to the party’s constitution, democratic values and the rule of law.

It also urged media organisations and the public to distinguish between the opinions of self-appointed groups and the official position of the Tuggar Campaign Organisation.

The campaign added that Ambassador Tuggar’s support base cuts across the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State and cannot be represented by a small group of individuals.
