Thousands flee as deadly wildfires engulf France, Spain

Published

on

Thousands of people have been displaced as raging wildfires continue to tear through parts of France and Spain, fuelled by scorching temperatures and prolonged dry conditions.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the disaster as the country’s most severe wildfire emergency since the end of World War II, highlighting the scale of destruction caused by the fast-moving blazes.

In neighbouring Spain, authorities said more than 63,000 residents have been evacuated from communities near Madrid as firefighters struggle to contain the advancing flames.

Emergency crews in both countries remain on high alert as extreme heat and strong winds continue to hamper firefighting efforts, raising concerns that the fires could spread further in the coming days.

Officials have urged residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders and safety instructions as authorities work to protect lives and property.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the fires “the most painful expression of the climate emergency,” highlighting the growing impact of extreme weather.

In France, emergency officials also reported the formation of rare “fire clouds” generated by the intensity of the wildfires, underscoring the scale of the disaster.

Weather forecasters have warned that above-average temperatures and little or no rainfall are expected throughout the week, raising fears that the fires could intensify and spread further.
