Macron postpones planned visits to Nigeria, Senegal amid protests in France
French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed his planned visits to Nigeria and Senegal scheduled for later this month, following violent riots that erupted alongside nationwide protests in France last weekend.
A French presidential source disclosed this on Friday, although the official did not explicitly link the postponement to the unrest.
According to the source, who requested anonymity, the visits were being postponed because they involved a “diplomatic and cooperation agenda”.
The source contrasted the planned African trip with Macron’s ongoing visit to the Gulf region, which has focused on securing energy supplies.
Macron’s planned visit to Nigeria was expected to take place on October 28 and 29, according to earlier reports. The trip was expected to strengthen bilateral relations between France and Nigeria and build on agreements reached during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to France in November 2024.
The postponement comes amid unrest in France following nationwide demonstrations on October 17, which were accompanied by clashes, looting and vandalism in several cities. French authorities have since announced restrictions on some planned protests and additional security measures ahead of further demonstrations.
No new dates for Macron’s visits to Nigeria and Senegal were provided in the report.
