A petrol tanker carrying about 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) caught fire on Thursday night while offloading fuel at AYM Shafa Filling Station, located beside the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) office on Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Way, Area 3, Garki, Abuja.

The incident left four people with varying degrees of injuries.

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) confirmed the fire outbreak and said emergency responders swiftly moved to the scene to prevent the blaze from spreading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services at the FFS Headquarters, DCF Paul Abraham, disclosed that the fire was successfully brought under control through a coordinated response involving emergency agencies.

He said the inferno affected part of the adjoining three-storey FCT-IRS building before firefighters contained it using multiple firefighting appliances, medium water jets and foam compound.

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, who acted as Incident Commander, personally coordinated the operation and remained at the scene until the early hours of Friday to ensure the fire was completely brought under control.

According to the statement, the four injured adult males were evacuated by a National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) ambulance to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged.

The FFS said a thorough inspection of the scene confirmed that there was no further fire outbreak or casualty, adding that all responding personnel and equipment had returned safely to their stations.

The Service commended residents, motorists and members of the public for their patience, cooperation and compliance with safety directives during the emergency response.

It also acknowledged the support of sister agencies, including the FCT Fire Service, NEMA, the Nigeria Police Force and other emergency responders, for their roles in managing the incident.

The FFS added that investigation had commenced to determine the immediate and remote causes of the fire, with a view to preventing future occurrences.

“The Federal Fire Service remains committed to safeguarding lives, property and critical national assets through prompt, professional and coordinated emergency response,” the statement added.
