Liverpool near agreement to sign Barcelona Captain Ronald Araújo on loan

Liverpool are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Barcelona captain Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan, with the proposed deal expected to include an option for the Premier League club to make the move permanent.

According to veteran transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, people familiar with the negotiations revealed that Araújo has accepted Liverpool’s proposal as he seeks more regular playing time away from Barcelona.

The Uruguay international could become one of new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola’s key defensive additions as the club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.

If completed, the deal would give Liverpool the opportunity to assess Araújo during the season before deciding whether to make his transfer permanent.

Araújo, 27, is primarily a centre-back but can also play at right-back, a versatility that could prove valuable to Liverpool, particularly with Conor Bradley currently sidelined through injury.

Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements became increasingly evident during their pre-season tour of the United States.

The club is also adjusting to the departure of Ibrahima Konaté, who left on a free transfer for Real Madrid at the end of last season.

Araújo has made 213 first-team appearances for Barcelona since joining the club from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018. He was promoted to the senior team in 2020 and eventually established himself as a key member of the defence and one of the club’s captains.

However, his prominence in the squad has declined under manager Hansi Flick, with injuries also affecting his opportunities.

Barcelona currently have several options in central defence, including Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, Gerard Martín and Andreas Christensen, further complicating Araújo’s chances of securing consistent first-team football.

The defender reportedly believes a move to Liverpool would provide him with the opportunity to play more regularly while testing himself in the Premier League.

The proposed loan would initially keep Araújo at Anfield for one season, while the option to make the move permanent could give Liverpool a chance to secure his services on a longer-term basis.
