Seven things you never knew about late NPC Chairman, Aminu Wushishi

Dr Aminu Yusuf (Talban Wushishi), Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), has died in Abuja, months after he was appointed to lead the commission.

A source within the NPC told Very Nigerian that Yusuf died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja shortly after the Jummah prayer.

The source said he fell ill about five days earlier while preparing for an official trip to Rwanda and had been suffering from what was described as a diabetes-related condition.

Here are seven things you never knew about the late NPC chairman:

1. Aminu Yusuf was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State.

He was popularly known as Talban Wushishi and had a long career in public service, politics and community development.

2. Yusuf started his education at LEA Primary School, Zungeru, before attending Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State.

He obtained his Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education, Minna, in 1983 and later earned a B.Sc. (Ed) in Biology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1988.

He also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration in 2001 and a Master’s Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from ABU in 2010.

He was pursuing a Ph.D. in International Relations at Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

3. Yusuf served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area and was also a Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly.

Between 2005 and 2007, he served as a board member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

4. From 2019 to 2023, Yusuf served as Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.

He was also involved in grassroots mobilisation and political activities within the state and the North Central region.

5. In 2022, Yusuf served as Assistant Director of Grassroots Mobilisation for the North Central region under the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.

In that role, he was involved in strengthening the campaign’s engagement with communities across the region.

6. Yusuf served as Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.

The committee implemented empowerment programmes aimed at improving the skills and livelihoods of women and young people in the Niger North Senatorial District.

He also served as National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, where he supported alumni activities and institutional development.

7. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Yusuf as Chairman of the National Population Commission, and he was sworn into office in Abuja on December 2, 2025.

His appointment came with expectations that his experience in governance, education and grassroots development would help strengthen the commission’s work in providing reliable population and demographic data for national planning.

His death comes only months after he assumed office as chairman of the commission.
