2027: Tinubu deserves second term to complete reforms – Reno Omokri

Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has urged Nigerians to re-elect President Bola Tinubu in 2027, arguing that the administration has recorded measurable progress despite the challenges associated with its economic reforms.

Omokri said his support for Tinubu was based on what he described as the administration’s policy outcomes rather than political considerations.

He made the remarks during an interview on the City Boy Movement (CBM) Podcast, anchored by O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital and New Media, in Abuja.

The ambassador-designate said the Tinubu administration had recorded progress in areas including education, infrastructure, economic growth, security, manufacturing and financial stability.

He identified education as one of the areas requiring sustained investment, particularly because of the country’s large out-of-school population.

“The reason we are spending trillions of naira today fighting insecurity is because, in the past, we did not spend billions fighting illiteracy,” Omokri said.

He cited the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), saying more than one million students were benefiting from the scheme.

According to him, providing students with access to education would eventually contribute to employment, entrepreneurship and economic expansion.

“If you have more than one million university students who are only in school because of NELFUND loans, that is significant because they will graduate, become employable, start businesses and expand the economy,” he said.

Omokri cites economic growth, infrastructure

Omokri also pointed to the expansion of Nigeria’s economy and developments in the manufacturing sector as evidence of progress under Tinubu.

He said improved financial stability and investments in infrastructure were among the reasons Nigerians should consider retaining the President beyond 2027.

He specifically mentioned the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, arguing that the projects would improve connectivity, reduce travel times and lower transportation costs.

“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will reduce travel time from Calabar to Lagos significantly, while the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway will cut journey time and put more money and time back into Nigerians’ pockets,” he said.

Omokri also cited sustained quarterly GDP growth and trade surpluses, referencing the latest National Bureau of Statistics report, which put Nigeria’s real GDP growth at 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026.

Security

On security, the ambassador-designate said the administration had strengthened Nigeria’s security architecture and intensified the fight against terrorism.

He argued that terrorist attacks on strategic facilities had reduced compared with the period before Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

“Look at what was happening before May 2023: terrorists attacked the Kuje prison, military installations and strategic facilities. Under President Tinubu, those kinds of attacks have reduced significantly,” he said.

Omokri acknowledged that security remained a major concern but maintained that the government had demonstrated greater commitment to addressing terrorism and other security threats.

Private sector should drive jobs

The former presidential aide also argued that government should not be expected to provide employment for every Nigerian.

According to him, the private sector remains the major driver of sustainable job creation, while government’s role should be to create an environment that encourages businesses and investments.

“Government should not be expected to provide every job. Its responsibility is to create a conducive environment where businesses can thrive, investments can grow, and young Nigerians can create opportunities for themselves,” he said.

He urged young Nigerians to explore opportunities in entrepreneurship, manufacturing, agriculture and tourism.

Omokri predicts Tinubu’s 2027 victory

Omokri further argued that Tinubu’s political prospects had strengthened ahead of the 2027 election.

He said the President’s victory in 2023 despite having fewer governors and facing significant political challenges demonstrated his ability to win competitive elections.

“The best predictor of future events is past events. If President Tinubu won despite having fewer governors and facing serious challenges in 2023, his performance and stronger political base make his victory in 2027 even more likely,” he said.

Omokri urged Nigerians to assess the administration based on measurable outcomes rather than political rhetoric.

He maintained that continuity was important for sustaining reforms and ensuring that ongoing investments in infrastructure, education, manufacturing, security and the economy produced their intended long-term benefits.
