2027: Tinubu’ll win 25% in every Northern state, Atiku won’t get 10% in many Southern states — Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has predicted that President Bola Tinubu will secure at least 25 per cent of the votes in every state across Northern Nigeria in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike also dismissed the chances of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the South, claiming the opposition politician would fail to secure 10 per cent of the votes in many Southern states.

The minister made the projection during a media chat in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, monitored in Abuja.

Wike was responding to concerns over Tinubu’s support base in the North and suggestions that the President could face a tougher contest in the region in 2027.

He argued that political analysts should also examine Atiku’s prospects outside his traditional support base rather than focusing solely on Tinubu’s chances in the North.

“There is no way in the North that the President will not make 25 per cent. There are so many places in the South that won’t have 10 per cent,” Wike said.

The former Rivers State governor went further to name states in the North-Central geopolitical zone where he said Tinubu would perform strongly.

“Let’s take North Central. Who will win in Plateau? The President will take Plateau. He will win Nasarawa. He will win Kwara. He will win Kogi,” he said.

Wike’s comments come amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Tinubu seeking a second term and Atiku expected to be one of the major opposition contenders.

The FCT minister also rejected arguments that the economic hardship and hunger being experienced by Nigerians would necessarily translate into votes against Tinubu.

According to him, economic difficulties and insecurity have featured prominently in previous Nigerian elections without automatically determining the eventual winner.

“Is there any election that had no hunger in Nigeria? Mention one election. Even with Buhari’s election, people were talking about insecurity and hunger. Everybody still voted,” Wike said.

The minister maintained that the political realities surrounding Nigerian elections were more complex than the economic conditions being experienced by voters.

His comments come amid continued criticism of the Tinubu administration over the cost-of-living crisis, rising food prices and insecurity, issues opposition parties are expected to make central to their campaigns ahead of the 2027 election.
