President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency, directing the Nigerian Police and Armed Forces to immediately recruit additional personnel to confront the escalating insecurity across the country.

In a statement released from the State House, Tinubu authorised the police to recruit 20,000 more officers, raising the total ongoing intake to 50,000.

He also approved the use of National Youth Service Corps camps as temporary training facilities to fast-track the exercise.

“Today, in view of the emerging security situation, I have decided to declare a nationwide security emergency and order additional recruitment into the Armed Forces,” the president said.

According to him, the police and the army are now fully authorised to expand their intake.

He added that officers withdrawn from VIP protection duties must undergo crash retraining for redeployment to vulnerable areas.

The president further empowered the Department of State Services to deploy trained forest guards to flush out terrorists and bandits hiding inside Nigeria’s forests, while also approving additional recruitment to strengthen the operation.

Tinubu appealed to citizens to support security agencies, describing the situation as a “national emergency” that requires collective action from all Nigerians.

He praised the recent rescue of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 worshippers in Kwara State, and vowed that efforts to free abducted students in Niger State would continue without pause.

He also paid tribute to fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba, saying their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

Tinubu urged the National Assembly to amend the law to allow states establish state police where necessary. He also advised governors, local authorities, and religious institutions to adopt stronger security measures.

On farmer-herder conflicts, the president emphasised the newly created Livestock Ministry, reiterating that open grazing must end. He encouraged herders to embrace ranching, surrender illegal weapons, and work with government to resolve long-standing clashes.

Tinubu cautioned states about establishing boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security and advised mosques and churches in vulnerable areas to constantly seek police protection.

He urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, report suspicious movements, and cooperate with security agencies.

“We are in this fight together, and together we shall win,” the statement concluded.
