The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has announced vacancies for qualified Nigerian professionals to fill four positions under its programmes and projects in Nigeria.

1. National Social Safeguards and Gender Specialist – SURAGGWA

Technical Focus

The successful candidate will support the implementation, monitoring and reporting of environmental and social safeguards, gender mainstreaming and social inclusion interventions under the SURAGGWA Project.

Key Responsibilities

The officer will be responsible for implementing and monitoring the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), Gender Action Plan (GAP) and other safeguards instruments.

Key duties include:

• Monitoring environmental, social, gender and inclusion safeguards under the SURAGGWA Project.
• Supporting gender-responsive and socially inclusive approaches in project implementation.
• Monitoring mitigation and remediation measures affecting farmers, indigenous communities and vulnerable groups.
• Supporting environmental impact mitigation, land restoration and sustainable agricultural production systems.
• Advising the project team on GCF environmental and social safeguards and FAO gender policies.
• Developing and monitoring social safeguard indicators and sex- and age-disaggregated data.
• Mainstreaming gender equality and social inclusion into training, institutional capacity-building and stakeholder engagement.
• Supporting the development of non-timber forest product (NTFP) value chains.
• Analysing quantitative and qualitative project data relating to gender, youth, indigenous peoples and vulnerable groups.
• Supporting grievance redress, citizen engagement and conflict-resolution mechanisms.
• Preparing technical reports, presentations and safeguard-related documentation for FAO, donors and government partners.
• Supporting culturally appropriate tools for gender, indigenous peoples, youth and vulnerable groups.
• Developing methodologies for sustainable management of land, water, forests and biodiversity.
• Carrying out other duties assigned by FAO.

Minimum Requirements

Experience in environmental and social safeguards, land restoration, natural resource management, rural development, gender mainstreaming, stakeholder engagement and grievance mechanisms will be highly relevant.

2. National Value Chains and Rural Finance Specialist – SURAGGWA

Technical Focus

The role involves programme development, coordination and technical and operational support, particularly in value-chain development, rural communities, forestry and non-timber forest products.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Develop communication materials on wild foods, forests, healthy diets and sustainable food systems.
• Identify learning needs and develop training tools for project beneficiaries.
• Develop training modules for the promotion of non-timber forest products.
• Conduct baseline assessments on NTFPs.
• Facilitate community-level training on landscape restoration and NTFP value-chain development.
• Train communities on establishing NTFP nurseries and participating in restoration activities.
• Produce reports and technical materials on forest-based contributions to sustainable agrifood systems.
• Support assessments on the consumption of wild and forest foods.
• Provide technical guidance on wild foods and NTFPs.
• Participate in technical meetings and workshops.
• Prepare progress reports and technical documents.
• Assess institutional gaps and recommend capacity-building strategies.
• Develop frameworks for inter-agency coordination and stakeholder engagement.
• Support institutional monitoring and reporting systems.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates with experience in land restoration, natural resource management, NTFP value chains, community participation, climate-resilient livelihoods and Northern Nigeria will be particularly relevant.

3. National Ecological Project M&E Specialist – SURAGGWA

Location: Kano

Technical Focus

The position will focus on monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL), project implementation, data analysis and reporting under the SURAGGWA Programme.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Develop and implement MEAL systems, tools and monitoring instruments.
• Monitor technical and physical project execution, financial management, indicators and project schedules.
• Collect and analyse quantitative and qualitative data throughout the project cycle.
• Generate evidence, lessons and recommendations to improve project implementation.
• Improve the project’s indicator system in line with donor and FAO requirements.
• Establish reporting mechanisms for government, donors, grantees and other stakeholders.
• Provide timely information for project coordination and committee meetings.
• Manage information required for project evaluations.
• Prepare and regularly update technical and financial progress reports.
• Generate information contributing to national statistics on food, agriculture, watersheds, vegetation and forest cover.
• Coordinate the project’s field monitoring team.
• Document good practices, lessons learned and recommendations.
• Coordinate database and GIS-related information management.
• Support monitoring of project contracts and agreements.
• Support external evaluation missions and implementation of recommendations.

Minimum Requirements

Additional Skills

Experience with R, STATA, SPSS, KoBoToolbox, ODK, SurveyCTO, ArcGIS or QGIS will be an advantage.

Candidates should also have relevant experience in programme/project management, agricultural development, monitoring and evaluation, data analysis and food and nutrition security.

4. Assistant FAO Representative (Programme)

Location: Abuja, FCT
Employment Type: Full-time
Duration: 2 years, with possibility of extension

Key Functions

The Assistant FAO Representative (Programme) will support FAO’s engagement with government authorities, UN agencies and other national and international institutions in Nigeria.

The role includes:

• Assisting government authorities and institutions in areas related to FAO’s activities.
• Representing FAO at inter-agency meetings when required.
• Promoting FAO’s mandate, programmes and activities.
• Supporting communication activities, including websites, press releases and publications.
• Supporting implementation of FAO regulatory frameworks in Nigeria.
• Coordinating and maintaining country data on food, crops, livestock, forestry and fisheries.
• Monitoring national policy changes affecting the agricultural sector.
• Participating in technical, economic and policy studies.
• Supporting development frameworks such as the Country Programming Framework (CPF) and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
• Identifying, formulating and preparing programme and project proposals.
