Former Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra gets 14-year jail term over bribery
A Peruvian court on Wednesday sentenced former president Martin Vizcarra to 14 years in prison after finding him guilty of collecting bribes during his time as a regional governor.
Vizcarra, who led Peru from 2018 to 2020 and often presented himself as a strong voice against corruption, was convicted for receiving payments from construction companies while he served as governor of Moquegua, a southern region, between 2011 and 2014.
According to prosecutors, the former leader accepted about $640,000 in bribes in exchange for giving the companies favourable access to public works contracts.
The 62-year-old politician remained calm and showed no emotion as the judge delivered the sentence at a court in Lima.
The prosecution had requested a 15-year sentence.
Vizcarra is the latest in a long line of former Peruvian presidents to be ordered to prison, mostly on corruption charges.
He will join three other former presidents Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) — who are already behind bars at a special detention center for former leaders in Lima.
Vizcarra has always maintained his innocence.
He was jailed for 22 days this year as an alleged flight risk but was released on bail pending the outcome of his trial, which began in October 2024.
