Two Guardsmen hospitalized after shooting near White House, Trump vows action
US President Donald Trump has vowed that the individual responsible for shooting two National Guardsmen in Washington DC will face a “steep price.”
The incident occurred near the Farragut metro station on Wednesday. The White House, situated about a mile from the scene, was placed on lockdown as a precaution, raising security concerns in the area.
Dozens of emergency responders and police vehicles arrived at the scene, where troops have been patrolling for months. Local authorities cordoned off several blocks, and one suspect has been taken into custody.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump had been briefed and that the administration was closely monitoring the situation.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price.” He expressed empathy for the National Guard and all Americans.
Washington currently hosts an estimated 2,375 National Guard troops, deployed since August when the Trump administration declared a “crime emergency” and ordered support for federal and local law enforcement.
The deployment has been extended multiple times, reportedly through February 2026.
A federal judge had previously ruled the deployment illegal but later suspended the ruling.
