Eight passengers die as two speedboats collide in Bakassi

Eight passengers are feared drowned after two speedboats collided in the Ikang axis of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident occurred on September 6, 2026, at about 12:14 p.m., according to the Cross River State Police Command.

The police said one of the boats, a W23 speedboat carrying 13 Nigerian passengers, was travelling from Ikang towards the Republic of Cameroon through Cameroon’s territorial waters around the Tikoro area when it collided with another W23 speedboat fitted with a double Yamaha engine.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Akata, said eight passengers were feared to have drowned following the collision, while five others were rescued alive with the assistance of local fishermen in Cameroon.

“Following the collision, eight passengers were feared drowned, while five passengers were rescued alive with the assistance of local fishermen in Cameroon,” the statement said.

The bodies of those feared drowned were later brought to Simon Beach in Ikang, Bakassi LGA.

The Marine Police in Ikang have been directed to ensure that the recovered bodies are properly identified by their families before being deposited at the morgue.

The police command said it was working with relevant authorities and the affected families to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

The command added that additional information would be released as soon as further details were verified.
