BREAKING: INEC removes Gwarzo’s name from updated 2027 Kano governorship candidates’ list
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has again excluded the name of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from its updated list of candidates for the 2027 general elections.
The development comes after Gwarzo petitioned the commission over the omission of his name from the initial list published on October 10, 2026.
A National Commissioner at INEC, Mohammed Haruna, had earlier disclosed that Gwarzo’s petition was successful but indicated that the publication of his name would depend on the outcome of a court order.
“His petition was considered successful, but publishing his name is subject to the final outcome of an ex-parte order by a Kano Federal High Court,” Haruna reportedly said.
However, checks by Daily Trust on the commission’s website showed that Gwarzo and his running mate were still missing from the updated list. INEC reportedly indicated “Court Order” in the remarks column against the relevant entries.
The latest development has raised fresh uncertainty over the NDC’s participation in the Kano governorship election.
The party had approached a Federal High Court in Abuja on October 27, seeking an order compelling INEC to include Gwarzo’s name on the list of governorship candidates.
On October 29, reports emerged that the commission had approved Gwarzo’s petition, alongside that of former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, and other candidates whose names were initially omitted.
However, the reported clearance was said to be subject to the outcome of pending court cases.
The latest list appears to indicate that Gwarzo’s name remains excluded because of a court order, despite the earlier report that his petition had been successful.
The initial omission had triggered protests and demands for clarification from the NDC, which maintained that its candidates had fulfilled the requirements for participation in the election.
The party had initially attributed the omission to a possible computer-related error and expressed confidence that INEC would correct it.
INEC, however, had explained that decisions concerning the publication of candidates’ names were influenced by legal requirements relating to the submission of political parties’ membership registers, following a Supreme Court judgment delivered on September 24, 2026, on provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
The latest development has renewed questions about the legal status of the NDC governorship ticket in Kano, with the party’s participation in the race remaining uncertain pending clarification of the court order and further action by the commission.
