BREAKING: Tinubu ends working vacation, departs Paris for Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has ended his working vacation in Europe and departed Paris, France, for Nigeria, the Presidency has announced.

The President is expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, later on Tuesday, according to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga said Tinubu decided to return through Lagos ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary to honour the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely associated with the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The President is scheduled to attend the premiere of a film commemorating Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, on October 1.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu will also remain in Lagos for several days, where he is expected to hold political meetings and consultations before returning to Abuja next weekend.

The President departed Abuja on August 30 for London to begin his working vacation. After spending about a week in the United Kingdom, he travelled to Paris, where he combined his stay with a number of official engagements.

While in France, Tinubu met with French President Emmanuel Macron and held discussions with businessman Vincent Bolloré of the Bolloré Group. The State House said the group’s media and digital interests include Canal+, MultiChoice and Universal Music Group, and that discussions included plans to deepen investment and localisation of operations in Nigeria.

Tinubu also met with business leaders, including Femi Otedola, Chairman of First Holdings.

The President had earlier witnessed the signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Ogun State Government and DP World for the development of the Gateway Deep Seaport in Ogun Waterside and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone.

The projects are expected to attract more than $7 billion in initial investment, according to the Presidency and other reports on the agreements.

The proposed Gateway Deep Seaport is expected to form part of a broader maritime and trade corridor, while the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone is planned to support investment and activities linked to the blue economy.

The Presidency had previously said Tinubu remained in contact with officials in Nigeria and continued to direct government affairs during his stay abroad.

His return to Nigeria comes after a four-week stay in Europe, which was initially scheduled as a three-week working vacation before the Presidency announced an extension by a few days.

After his arrival in Lagos, Tinubu is expected to participate in activities marking Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary and attend the Abiola film premiere before proceeding with other engagements.

The President is also expected to hold meetings with political leaders and associates in Lagos as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

The Presidency said Tinubu would subsequently return to Abuja after completing his engagements in Lagos.
