Super Eagles drop to 30th in latest FIFA ranking
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have fallen four places to 30th in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking released on Wednesday.
The three-time African champions were previously ranked 26th in the world but have now slipped to sixth among African teams.
The latest ranking saw Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire move ahead of Nigeria on the continent.
The drop follows a disappointing international window for Eric Chelle’s team, which recorded mixed results in its recent fixtures.
The Super Eagles started the period with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.
The defeat to Guinea-Bissau contributed to Nigeria’s decline in the latest global ranking as the Super Eagles continue their preparations and qualification campaign for major international competitions.
The Super Eagles rounded off the window with a nervy 3-3 draw against Russia in an international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
Nigeria had entered the latest ranking as Africa’s fourth-highest ranked team, behind Morocco, Senegal and Egypt.
The latest FIFA ranking leaves Morocco as Africa’s highest-ranked nation, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria. The top 10 African ranking has Morocco first, followed by Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, DR Congo, Cameroon, Mali and Tunisia. Morocco are the highest-ranked African nation in seventh place.
Globally, Spain remain top of the FIFA ranking, ahead of Argentina, France, England and Portugal. Brazil, Morocco, Belgium, Netherlands and Mexico complete the top ten.
