Again, D’Tigers fall to Guinea in W’Cup qualifiers
Nigeria’s D’Tigers fell 68–55 to Guinea on Saturday in their second qualifying game for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Guinea controlled the game from start to finish in the one-sided match played at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès in Tunisia.
The loss marks Nigeria’s second defeat of the qualification round, following their opening-day loss to hosts Tunisia on Thursday.
D’Tigers were already behind from the first quarter 22-16 and the performance failed to improve their allround play in the second quarter. The scoreline was 35-26 by halftime.
The closest Nigeria got to nicking the game from the Guineans was the third quarter but even that fell short. The status quo remained in the final quarter as Guinea sealed a vital 13-point victory.
D’Tigers will face Rwanda on Sunday for their final game of the initial half of the first round of the qualifiers.
The teams in the group will play each other once more in the concluding half of the first round. The top three teams from the group will qualify for the final round.
The top five African teams will qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, scheduled for August 27 to September 12.
