Chelsea hold Arsenal 1-1 with ten men in bad-tempered London clash
Arsenal maintained their grip at the top of the Premier League on Sunday after Mikel Merino’s second-half header rescued a 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea in a heated London derby at Stamford Bridge.
The match was played at a relentless pace and swung dramatically when Moises Caicedo was sent off shortly before halftime for a reckless challenge on Merino, a decision upgraded to red after VAR intervention.
But despite their numerical disadvantage, Chelsea stunned the visitors moments into the second half.
Trevoh Chalobah rose highest to glance home a brilliant header from Reece James’ corner, putting the Blues ahead and igniting a charged atmosphere inside the Bridge.
Arsenal, however, refused to be bullied.
Bukayo Saka, who had been involved in an earlier clash with Marc Cucurella, dazzled down the flank, beating defenders before delivering a pinpoint cross that Merino powered past Robert Sánchez for the equaliser in the 59th minute.
The Gunners, unbeaten in 17 matches across all competitions, pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Sánchez pulled off two crucial saves, first denying Saka and then Merino, to ensure Chelsea held on for a point.
For Arsenal, it was a missed chance to widen their lead in the title race. They now sit five points clear of Manchester City and six ahead of Chelsea.
For the Blues, the performance, coming after their Champions League victory over Barcelona, was another sign of steady resurgence under Enzo Maresca.
The game was littered with heavy tackles and bookings.
Both sides exchanged bruising challenges, with tempers flaring throughout the first half. Arsenal were without injured defender William Saliba, and Chelsea fielded 18-year-old sensation Estevão Willian, whose early promise fizzled out in front of goal.
The draw keeps Arsenal in pole position for their first league title since 2004, but Chelsea’s fight, even with 10 men, suggests they will be a major obstacle in the months ahead.
