Senate launches probe into Corps member’s death at Enugu NYSC camp
Bassey said reports indicated that Daniel died from complications arising from a minor headache after allegedly experiencing delays in receiving adequate medical attention at the camp clinic.
The Senate has ordered an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, at the organisation’s orientation camp in Enugu State.
The decision was reached on Thursday following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While presenting the motion, Bassey said the Senate received the news of Daniel’s death with shock.
He described the deceased as a former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University who had proceeded to undertake the mandatory national service.
Bassey said reports indicated that Daniel died from complications arising from a minor headache after allegedly experiencing delays in receiving adequate medical attention at the camp clinic.
He said the incident raised serious concerns about medical services in NYSC camps, including the availability of qualified personnel, functional facilities and emergency referral systems.
The senator stressed that the government had a constitutional duty to protect citizens’ welfare, adding that graduates mobilised for national service deserved adequate medical care.
He said Daniel’s death had thrown his family, the university community and Akwa Ibom State into mourning.
Seconding the motion, Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North) called for a thorough investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
Adopting the motion, the Senate directed its committees on Police, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Youth Development, and Health, alongside the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to investigate whether negligence contributed to the death.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, thanked Bassey for raising the matter and urged the committees to conduct a thorough investigation.
